Burning Ban in Effect
02/14/2008

Due to hazardous fire conditions and the lack of rain in Harnett County, Harnett County Fire Marshal Jimmy Riddle has issued a Burning Ban for ALL burning within 100' of a residence.  This coincides with the burning ban issued by the NC Forestry Service to ban all burning outside of 100' of a residence.  The Fire Marshal's office will advise when the ban is lifted.

Automated Waste Collection is Here!!!

Effective immediately - automated roll-out waste collection has begun!  This program will result in a cleaner, more attractive environment as well as safer working conditions for the refuse collectors.  The new trash collection system uses one type of container that will be emptied  by automated equipment, making the process faster and safer.  Wheeled carts make trash collection easier for everybody.  Carts are stable and designed not to blow over, even in high winds.  Lids are attached and snug-fitting to keep pests and animals out.  The carts also have a smooth interior, making cleaning easier.

To help us serve you better:

  • Place the container within 4 feet of the curb with the handle and wheels facing away from the street.
  • Make sure the container is at least 4 feet from trees, mailboxes, cars, other roll-outs, yard waste and recyclables or any other obstructions.
  • Only items that are placed in the cart will be collected by the automated truck.  Do not leave trash or garbage outside the roll-out container.  It will not be collected unless you have called for bulk pickup.  If you regularly generate more household trash and garbage than your roll-out container will hold, call customer service to order an additional container, for an additional charge.

Do's and Don'ts for Cart Use

Do:

  • Place all trash in the cart.
  • Keep the lid closed.
  • Place the cart as close as possible to the curb (with the cart handle facing your house) on collection day and return it to your home when empty.
  • Place your container at the curb by 6:00 am or the night before your scheduled collection day.
  • Notify us if your cart is damaged or stolen or if you have any questions.

Don't

  • Put construction debris in the cart.
  • Put yard waste in the cart.
  • Put hot ashes in the cart.
  • Overfill the cart - The lid must close.
  • Pack trash in too tightly.
  • Paint or write on the cart.
  • Remove the cart from your residence.
  • Use another container.  Only the roll out cart issued can be used.

If you have any questions or problems please call customer service in Dunn at 910-891-4461.

Mandatory Water Conservation
08/29/2007

Mandatory Water Conservation Notice

Harnett County is imposing immediate mandatory water conservation measures in light rapidly falling water levels in Jordan Lake. As of August 20, 2007 the Lake was down to 66% of the water quality levels. It is anticipated to be at less than 60% by the week beginning August 26, 2007. Jordan Lake supplies water to the Cape Fear River and once the levels go below 60% mandatory water conservation measures are strongly recommended for the water systems downstream.

All non-essential water use (Class 3) is restricted to the following:

Outdoor irrigation is restricted to once weekly on the following schedule:

Odd-numbered addresses may irrigate lawns and landscapes only between midnight and 10 a.m. on Tuesdays.

Even-numbered addresses may irrigate lawns and landscapes only between midnight and 10 a.m. on Wednesdays.

Washing vehicles at home is allowed only on Saturdays and Sundays.

Washing sidewalks, patios, decks, driveways and building exteriors is allowed only on Saturdays and Sundays.

Filling of swimming pools is prohibited.

Fire hydrant use is prohibited.

Exceptions to these restrictions are as follows:

Agricultural irrigation is allowed for the production of food or the maintenance of livestock.

Irrigation is allowed for commercial nurseries at a minimum level necessary to maintain stock.

Commercial car and truck washes are allowed to wash vehicles.

Municipal pools and those used by health care facilities can be filled.

Fire Hydrants can be used for fire fighting purposes.

Enforcement

The first violation will incur a warning and all subsequent violations will constitute
a penalty of $35.00. Every day a violation occurs shall be considered a separate violation. Penalties shall be added to the customers water bill and paid in the same manner as current payments to HCDPU.

Voluntary water conservation measures were initiated by Harnett County in late May in hope that the drought would end in the upcoming weeks. This has not been the case and weather predictions are not favorable for any relief in the near future. We feel that these measures are prudent in light of these conditions and are in concert with the surrounding water systems in the region. These restrictions will be in place until conditions improve and water levels return to normal. Thank you in advance for your understanding and adherence to these measures.
